Security Cables Ineffective in Preventing Theft
Recovered December 8, 2005 (26 days to recover)
While studying at the University of Maryland, Marc’s computer, as well as those belonging to his two roommates, disappeared from their campus dorm room. Although all three laptops were tethered to desks with security cables, the cables were simply ripped from the laptops and left behind.
A few weeks after the theft, LoJack for Laptops, a computer tracking software installed on Marc's computer started called-in with its location - a dorm room on the eighth floor, just two floors from where the laptops had been stolen. Absolute Software’s Theft Recovery Team immediately notified Sgt. Jim Goldsmith of the UMD Campus police. Sgt. Goldsmith obtained a search warrant and arrested the suspect. The laptop was recovered and various charges were laid.
As Marc discovered, “No laptop is totally secure out there, even with security cables attached. Students would really benefit from knowing about LoJack for Laptops.”
Indeed, the two laptops that were stolen along with Marc’s – and were not protected by LoJack for Laptops – have yet to be returned to their rightful owners
